Launching the Blog!

Howdy folks! Rather than just one-way communication through our tips section, we’ve decided to launch an interactive blog for the many marketing-minded people out there who want to shoot the breeze. We get lots of great comments and feedback from our website, so thought it might be fun to share. We’d love to see your comments, and posts, so gear up your fingers and let us know what you think about marketing, sales, our company, or anything related to it!

    Hello,

I am looking at different marketing courses to take through Mount Royal University and I have the option between the certificate program and the diploma program. I am wondering if, as an employer, do you tend to choose or favor one over the other when hiring? I am about to completely change careers and I want to do it right and take it seriously.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Nick

Hello Nick! Typically the level of education in marketing goes from certificate to diploma to degree. At START Marketing, we’d be looking for people with a degree level of education. We would even encourage working towards a masters’ degree for higher level consulting. I suggest you check for transferability between the three levels at Mount Royal. It would make sense to get a certificate, if that also gets you halfway to a diploma. Likewise if a diploma gets you halfway to a degree. That way you can get credentials as-you-go instead of waiting a full 4 years to get a degree. Check out our Careers page for info on our Apprenticeship program…and read the column at the bottom of that page on Starting a Career in Marketing.

    Hi,

I am finishing up my last year of business school with a major in marketing. I read the article you mentioned above, but I was thinking in the direction of volunteering to get some hands-on knowledge of which direction I want to take. Do you think this is this a realistic option at Start Marketing?

    Thanks!
    Amanda

Volunteering is a great way to get some expertise in marketing. I would generally reserve volunteering for charitable causes as opposed to a for-profit business such as ours. That said, I understand your wanting to get your feet wet in marketing. Did you check out the apprenticeship program? If it’s of interest, you could be involved on a part-time basis. I will give the volunteering thing some thought. What sort of work might interest you?
